How to Setup Ubuntu 18.04 / 18.10 on Windows 10 using VirtualBox

To build Ubuntu 18.04 with VirtualBox, follow the stages below.

Step 1

Open the Oracle VM VirtualBox and click the New button to create a new VM. In the virtual machine creation window, specify the VM name in the Name section and the RAM value in the Memory Size section.

Next, select the Create a virtual hard disk nowoption to create a virtual disk and click on the Create button.

Step 2

Storing the VM on a different HDD is influential in terms of performance. After you specify the VM disk size as 20 GB, click the Create button.

Step 3

After creating the VM, open the settings and remove the Floppy option.

Step 4

In the Processor section, check Enable PAE/NX.

Configure the video memory of the VM to 128 MB.

Click Storage and then Empty. In the Attributes section, click on Optical Drive to add the Linux ISO file to the VM.

Click the Continue button to confirm the changes on the disk.

Continue by choosing the region you live in.

Configure your user account information for Ubuntu and click Continue.

After successfully setting up Ubuntu LTS, proceed to the next stage to install Guest packages.

How to Add Guest Additions on Oracle VM Software

Once you have set up a virtual machine on VBox, you need to setup the Guest Additions software. After you have installed Guest Packages, you can transfer files between the virtual machine and the host computer. You can also use the virtual machine in full-screen mode.

Step 1

To setup Guest Additions, first click on Devices from the virtual machine menu and then click Insert Guest Additions CD image.

Step 2

Continue by clicking the Run button in the following info window.

Step 3

Type your root password and click on the Authenticate button.

Step 4

After you complete the Guest Additions setup on Ubuntu, restart the VM.

Step 5

You can now use the VM as a full screen.

How to Install Ubuntu 18.10 Using VirtualBox on Windows 10

The code name for Ubuntu 18.10, released on October 18, 2018, was called “Cosmic Cuttlefish“. You can download the image file of this new version to your computer and install a clean Linux or update your existing system to the new version.

You can download your ISO file from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/HEADER.html. After downloading the ISO file, you can install and use Ubuntu using the Oracle VM program on the Windows 10 operating system.

The steps for installing Ubuntu 18.10 with VBox are exactly the same as the steps you followed! Don’t forget to install Guest Additions after installing it!
